IMPRESSIONISM

WebQuest for 9th-12th Grades (Art Through The Ages curriculum)

Designed by Stanley F. Gilmore JR

sfgilmo@k12.carr.org

BACKGROUND

The lesson on Impressionism, which includes Pop Art as a link, or vise versa, was developed as a collaborate professional development plan between Mrs. Saltzgiver and me. Her lesson evolves around Pop Art with a link to mine. Both lessons were developed with the same basic outcomes and similar activities so that any student could use one or the other within the teacher's discretion.

It is advised that the teacher assign ahead of time the artist to the student. This decision will be based upon the permission slip returned as some parents may object to studying artists who do nude paintings. (A permission slip can be found in the Evaluations/Docs section of the WebQuest. You will have to design your own to suit your own needs.)

STUDENTS

This lesson is a component of our 19C Art Through The Ages course. This course is often selected to fulfill the state's graduation requirements for a Fine Arts credit or an entry level course to pursue further study in future art courses. This class may include 9th -12th grade students. It is strongly advised that students have some basic knowledge of painting and use of brush techniques. This lesson can definitely be modified to meet various student needs and abilities to be successful for all. Obviously, understanding how to manuever through the Internet is needed, but WebQuest is definitely user friendly for all.

VISUAL ARTS CURRICULUM STANDARDS

The Maryland Standards for the Visual Arts are presented in the Standards component of this WebQuest.

PROCESS

1. Students will explore and gather data on their assigned artist. Each Art Critic group has two artits and includes numerous sites of biographies and various sites of museums.

2. It's imperative each student keeps sufficient notes on all the research done in each site so they can compile in-depth data for a minimum (2) page typed critique on the artist, style used, and review of the art work accomplished, with one art piece as the focal point of the written article describing how its success and the others is based upon the proper use of the Art Elements and Principles of Design.

3. Once this process is accomplished, the focus becomes creating an original work of art that demonstrates the style, colors, and technique of that artist without copying any one piece the artist created. Subject choice is a definite consideration as each artist had their own personal subjects associated with their works. Obviously, nudes* will not be a subject, although some did in fact do them. (*Some schools may not frown on this but each school should be responsible to the values and concerns of their community.) The size of the art work should be at least 16 x 20 or larger and can be done on paper or canvas board/paper. Acrylics or oils (if available) should be the media.

4. Upon completion of the work of art, each student will write their own Artist's Statement following the guide lines provided in the template found in Evaluations/Docs section of the WebQuest. (Teacher may want to print these out ahead of time rather than have students do it.)

5. The Critque, Painting, and Artist's Statement each have a seperate Rubric. Teachers should discuss these with students during their introduction. Each of these seperate rubrics are found in the Evaluation/Docs section of the WebQuest. (Teacher should print these out ahead of time. Directions for printing my templates and rubrics are found in the "Evaluations/Docs" section.)

6. Both the painting and the Artist's Statement will be part of a school wide exhibit.

*******As the teacher, you need to be fully aware of the artists provided for you in each of the Art Critic sections and know the background of the artists and their styles so you can be a facillator as needed in giving guidance. Time provided in doing these activities is subject to the dictates of the class time, availability of computers, skill level of the students, and other resources available. My classes are 90 min. mods, and I am allowing 2 weeks as a time frame in competing all three activities.

CONSIDERATIONS/RESOURCES NEED

Media specialist (Further possibilities for research ideas)

Computer Lab or adequate location for students to access the Internet

Painting supplies - paints (acrylic or oils), canvas board/paper, art paper, brushes, etc.

Know your students and their abilities in conducting research activities, writing the two papers, and artistic skills to complete the painting successfully.

EVALUATION

All evaluations are provided in the WebQuest, but feel at liberty to design and make your own to suit student needs and the curriculum standards the class may be judged by within the state and system criterias.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

At the top of the home page of the WebQuest you will find a symbol of a school. Clicking on it, you will be directed to my school and have access not only to our Art Department, but to the background of Mrs. Saltzgiver and me.
