Introduction

Have you ever pondered how Mary Shelley came up with the idea for her
masterpiece novel, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus? It takes a pretty
active imagination to consider the creation of life from dead body parts and
the repercussions of such a deed. What is even more impressive, or
disconcerting, is the fact that she was only eighteen when she thought up
the plot and began writing the book.

A new edition of the text is going to be published and the publisher is
coming to you to help compose its introduction. Congratulations and good
luck as you explore the life of Shelley, the genesis of Frankenstein, and
the evolution of Frankenstein’s “monster”!
