Introduction

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851) was an
English romantic/gothic novelist, most notably recognized as the author of
Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, set in Europe in the 1790's, deals with Victor Frankenstein, a
man who eventually brings a monster to life. Prior to his creation Victor
was obsessed with studying scientific theories about humans. He devises a
plan to re-create and reanimate a dead body. He uses a combination of
chemistry, alchemy, and electricity to make his ambition a reality.

After bringing the creature to life, Victor feels guilty that he has brought
a new life into the world with no provisions for taking care of
the “monster.” He runs away in fear and disgust from his creation and his
conscience. The monster wanders the countryside searching for friendship.
After the monster gets rejected by nearly everyone he comes into contact
with, he becomes a brutal vengeful creature, murdering both Frankensteins
brother and his cousin/fiance Elizabeth.

Once Victor discovers his fiance dead he vows to pursue and destroy the
monster
