Twain's Mississippi

River boats played an important part in Hannibal and in Twain's life.  Why?  
The Mississippi River flowed passed the back porches of many houses and 
businesses in the town.  

Look at the  map of Hannibal and trace the path of 
the river through the state.  In the 1800s, why would a river be so important?

Check out river boats.  
Read about the kinds of boats the floated down the Mississippi.  Which ones 
might have gone by Hannibal?  Listen to the sounds of the Mississippi by 
clicking on each boat.  Mark twain!
