Tom Robinson
Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white girl in the 1930s. He was payed
on occasions by Mayella Ewell, the girl who accused him of rape, to do her
chores. Robinson was portrayed as a strong and hard working man. He had a
disability with his left arm and it was useless. He was innocent of the
crime that he was charged, but because he was black, he was condemned by the
community. He was tried and found guilty by a jury of white men.
You have assumed the role of Tom Robinson. You must describe what life was
like for a black man and his family in the Deep South during the 1930's. Be
sure to describe the racism you faced and the jobs you had or were available
to you.
