GRADE LEVEL: This webquest is intended for 7th & 8th grade math students.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: None
PACING SUGGESTIONS: Students should be able to review the listed websites and print resources, given two class periods and two nights with internet access from home. For students with little or no internet access at home, they will be alotted additional class time to review the resources. The print resources will be available to the students during their two research days. The students, in using a print resource, will photocopy their specific pages, and will not be allowed to take the books home. The webquest is intended to span seven days, so that the weekend can be used to unleash each student's creativity for the poster activity.
ALTERNATIVES FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF LEARNERS: Permission and adequate reason is needed in order to replace the poster activity with something else that is visual. Appropriate visual replacements might include: video commercial, brochure, power point presentation.
WA STATE STANDARDS: ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC LEARNING REQUIREMENTS (EALR) 5.3 Relate mathematical concepts and procedures to real-life situations -- understand the connections between mathematics and problem-solving skills used every day at work and at home.
1.1 Develop concept and design. Develop a topic or theme; organize written thoughts with a clear beginning, middle, and end; use transitional sentences and phrases to connect related ideas; write coherently and effectively.
1.3 Apply writing conventions. Know and apply correct spelling, grammer, sentence structure, punctuation, and capitalization.
2.2 Write for different purposes, such as telling stories, presenting analytical responses to literature, persuading, conveying technical information, completing a team project, and explaining concepts and procedures.
2.3.2 Evaluate informational materials, including electronic sources, for effectiveness.
2.3.4 Synthesize information from a variety of sources.
