THE DAY OF THE DEAD
The Day of the Dead is an ancient holiday that originated from the Aztec
celebration of the children and dead. After the Spansih conquest, the
Catholic priest moved the holiday to early November during the Christian
celebration of All Hallows Eve. Therefore the celebration is a mix between
Aztec and Christian celebration. Families construct altars containing
religious objects, pictures, and favorite food and drink of the departed
family members. This is done inside the homes to welcome the dead back into
the house for the holiday. Afterwards the families visit the grave and
decorate it with bright flowers. Later a feast is prepared and everyone
eats while sharing stories about the loved ones who have passed. The Day of
the Dead is an important event in Mexican culture that is celebrated
differently throughout the country and even in the United States.
