"I busied myself to think of a story--a story to rival those which had
excited us to this task. One that would speak to the mysterious fears of
our nature and awaken thrilling horror-one to make the reader dread to look
around, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart. If I
did not accomplish this, my ghost story would not be unworthy of its name."
~Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley set out to write a ghost story that would unnerve, bother, and
scare readers. Was it the unnamed monster who was supposed to scare the
reader or what happens to him? Shelley's story has inspired many: film
makers, story-tellers, and writers; however, the interpretations are all
different. You are going to research and discover how her story relates to
today's world. You will get to decide which observation of life is the main
one. Then, you will have a chance to sway your classmates.
