Students will be divided into the four roles of immigrant, progressive,
party boss/industrialist, and nativist. They will be asked to research these
roles using the provided resources and try to understand their positions.
The goal is to see that there are grey areas in the debate. Questions are
provided to guide their research.
After their research is completed, students will hold a debate or
discussion in class. Each group will be asked the important questions for
their role. After each group presents their opinions, the other three
disband and discuss what they want their minute response to be. The speaker
will rotate. Students are to stay in character until the conclusion of the
debate. After the debate is finished, students will individually write a two
page paper. It will discuss both the position of their historical figure and
important aspects of the class debate.
