1. Divide into four equal groups of six or seven.
2. Ask for the role assignment from the teacher.
3. Read the description of your role and the list of resources to evenly
divide up the work. Keep in mind that all students will be expected to
contribute to the debate.
4. Students will be given 3 days to do research, take notes, and outline
answers to the provided questions. Hint: All of these roles are three
dimensional. Students should try to understand these people and what has led
them to believe what they do.
5. The fourth day students will meet in class to develop group answers to
the questions and decide what their three minute presentation to the class
will cover. Hint: the presentation should answer the five to six questions.
6. The fifth day will be the debate.
7. Desks will be formed in a circle with each groups’ members sitting
together.
8. The order of the presentations will be: immigrant, progressive, party
boss/industrialist, and nativist.
9. The teacher will serve as moderator asking questions similar to those
five or six provided and what the students have found in research that
supports these findings.
10. After each presentation the other three groups will disband for five
minutes to discuss what they want their one minute response to be. This will
continue until all four groups have presented and rebutted.
11. Finally for about ten minutes the class will have a discussion not as
their roles. Here the class will discuss themes and their personal opinions.
12. Their two page paper is due in two days. In it they will discuss their
positions of their role as well as the important themes and points of the
debate.
