The year is 1917; the "Great War" has raged in Europe for three long years
and has taken millions of lives, including those of soldiers involved in the
fighting and civilians who have been caught in the crossfire. While the
United States has made valiant attempts to remain isolated and not become
involved in the war, it is evident that this war to end all wars will
eventually cross the Atlantic. In the United States, war will impact its
citizens in many different ways and through various roles. Reporters
chronicle the cultural impact of the war. US soldiers of the American
Expeditionary Force are in the trenches. Soldiers write home of their
experiences in Europe. Politicians debate the role of the United States in
the conflict (should we be involved or not)? Women, while not actively
fighting, take up new roles in the workforce and are responsible for
maintinaing the homelife of America with the absence of sons, fathers and
brothers.
