Women

It is the responsibility of this group member to research and evaluate the 
role of women in the war effort. Consideration of the role both at home and 
abroad should be investigated. Two letters to a soldier away fighting or from 
a nurse to her home while she is away treating soldiers in combat, or two 
diary entires showing a woman's responsibilties at home will be produced.

Women In The War Effort- In 1901 and 1908 the establishment of the Army and 
Navy Nurse Corps opened the door for women in the military but ever so 
slightly. It wasn't until the United States got involved in World War One 
that some parts of the government got serious about using woman power.

Women in World War One- Some WWI photographs from the National Archives - 
taken at the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard in California of women in the U.S. 
Navy assigned to supply duties. At the time the women were referred to 
as "yeomanettes" although the official designation was Yeoman (F).

Women's Peace Party- In February 1915 an international meeting of women met 
in Amsterdam. Several women Britain that had been involved in the struggle 
for the vote before the war took part, including Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, 
Catherine Marshall and Chrystal Macmillan. Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent 
Fawcett both accused the women of treason and urged their supporters not to 
attend.
